Fall is officially in the air… and lucky for us San Diegans, as Bob Marley would say, “the sun is shining, the weather is sweet”.
That being said- I am really excited about a new pet-industry product called My Dog Nose It. This sweet-smelling balm provides sun protection for your dog’s nose. After hearing about this product in industry releases the past several weeks, I finally got my hands on some for Jack. I receive a lot of packages in the mail from companies giving Jack the chance to try their product and share it with you guys. This package in particular had me grinning from ear to ear! Recently I have noticed that as Jack ages, the color complexion on his black nose has started to fade to a light brown and become patchy with light spots.
For those of you with older pets, I’m sure you have noticed pigment changes as your pet’s nose starts to get lighter or darker. Some dog breeds have noses that go from black to brown, or brown to pink as they age. This is a totally normal phenomenon. Veterinarians call it “lentigo simplex”, and it is no cause for concern.
However, just like the calluses on our dry hands or the natural peeling of skin from a sunburn, the same effects go for our dogs’ noses. That black nose your pup sports might become a lighter shade due to the sun’s ultraviolet rays, while some dogs born with pink noses will later darken as they age. This is the result of the break down of tyrosinase, an enzyme that produces pigment. Since tyrosinase is also temperature-sensitive and happens in warmer weather, this explains the ‘winter nose’ color some dogs get when the weather gets cold.
Our friends at My Dog Nose It have created water proof sunscreen for Fido’s nose, leaving their snout feeling soft and moist, while also protecting from UV rays for hours. The organic balm comes in a yummy, buttery smell that is not the least bit overwhelming to Fido’s sensitive nose. I am very optimistic about this product- especially in a city like sunny San Diego!
Hope you all had a nice weekend and enjoyed the outdoors! Woof!
